When we’re missing a loved one and thinking about them, we might find ourselves drawn to things that keep them close to us: aged photographs, a treasured heirloom, the familiar scent of a specific perfume or cologne, or cherished memories we replay in our minds.

For former First Lady Michelle Obama, remembrance took on a different form. It became a meaningful fashion piece that represented love, admiration, and personal style. Last month, Mrs. Obama appeared onstage alongside former President Barack Obama at a stakeholders’ reception at the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side. 

For the occasion, she wore a sleek ensemble of tailored separates with clean lines and a close-fitting silhouette, creating an air of understated elegance. Upon closer look, at the heart of the ensemble was a pencil skirt that carried the image of someone very dear to Michelle Obama: her late mother, Marian Robinson. 

Serving as a tribute to Marian Robinson, a large, sepia-toned portrait of her as a young woman was printed across the front of the skirt. In the portrait, Marian Robinson has a neatly coiffed pixie haircut, a cheery smile, and gentle eyes. As Michelle Obama herself said, this portrait is her favorite of her late mother.

For her remaining ensemble pieces, Michelle Obama kept them understated, which allowed the skirt to be the focal point. She paired the skirt with a dark brown short-sleeved crew-neck top with a knit-like texture, along with a pair of brown pointy-toe slingback heels by Saint Laurent. Then, for the final touches, Michelle Obama cinched the skirt with a skinny, black leather belt and accessorized with silver-toned jewelry from Spinelli Kilcollin and Yvonne Léon, adding subtle glamour to her look.

But the question remains: who was the design maestro behind the memorable skirt?

Rather than being attributed to a single person, the skirt and overall look were the result of creative minds coming together. According to Vogue, Michelle Obama’s reception outfit was based on look 29 from Acne Studios’ fall 2026 collection. On the runway, the skirt had a large, grayscale photo of a young man taken by Dutch photographer Paul Kooiker. In addition to the printed skirt, the runway model donned a slender belt, a short-sleeved knit top, and pointed heels, elements that the former First Lady also embraced in her look. Rather than opting for the exact skirt shown on the runway, Michelle Obama’s longtime stylist, Meredith Koop, proposed creating a custom version with a personal detail. 

Michelle Obama has shared in the past that despite their humble background, her parents Marian and Fraser Robinson instilled in their children key values such as the importance of education, perseverance, self-worth, and respect for others. Just as important, Marian and Fraser Robinson also gave their children unconditional love and unwavering support.

“We were poor. We lived in a small house, but what they gave us was a feeling of importance, a belief that our voices mattered at a very young age, a sense of understanding, of pushing through, resilience,” Michelle Obama said in a video by ABC7 Chicago.

Not only did the former First Lady look sleek and sophisticated the day of the stakeholders’ reception, but she also showed us how fashion can be a beautiful instrument for expressing one’s emotions and for preserving the memory of a loved one. 

Marian Robinson may no longer be here physically, but one would imagine that she would’ve been touched by her daughter’s loving tribute and delighted to see the newly built Obama Presidential Center, which is located on the South Side of Chicago, the neighborhood she called home.
