How James Jeter Is Reinventing the American Dream at Polo Ralph Lauren

During Milan Fashion Week, the industry’s top fashion houses had the opportunity to influence trends in luxury menswear, using their runways not only as platforms to showcase collections but as a way to stand out and make a case for why their brands deserve to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry.

Ralph Lauren has remained consistent for nearly six decades. Building their brand image on the complexity of American prep through tailored blazers, varsity sweaters, equestrian imagery, and a minimalist take on opulence. Ralph Lauren has never sought merely to make clothes but to shape an aesthetic of American life, one that we cannot all live in yet still dream of.

Throughout the years, the American perspective on luxury has been shaped by powerhouse brands like Ralph Lauren, and the need for cultural nuance in American prep style is long overdue. The solution to this lies in the design prowess of James Jeter, a true example of the American dream. A Morehouse alumnus, he began as a sales associate at Ralph Lauren as a teenager and has now been named Polo Ralph Lauren’s first Black creative director, overseeing design and brand direction for Men’s Polo.

Jeter has already garnered attention after collaborating on a collection with his alma mater, Morehouse, and Spelman College, but his Spring/Summer 2027 Polo and Purple label runway collection, “Dream Racers,” has the potential to cement his seat at the table of new leaders in the industry. The collection presented a new vision of American prep while still holding the brand’s mythology tight. Instead of changing what has made Ralph Lauren great over the years, he simply aimed to reinvent and expand on the brand’s vision.

In recent years, new creative directors have hyper-fixated on making monumental changes to the established brands they oversee. Jeter’s most recent collection shows that he is an expert who understands the rules well but follows them on his own terms; he establishes this through his strong ability to blend the monolithic Polo Ralph Lauren vision and visualize a more refined look that ushers a youthful and streetwear-like feel, which makes Polo Ralph Lauren appear the most accessible and fun it’s ever looked.

This collection’s defining pieces featured beautifully tailored denim patchwork, unconventional flannel work, eccentric tailoring, and a futurist spin on American Prep as we know it. The collection even debuted a new outfit for the iconic Polo Bear. Instead of the familiar, aristocratic look we’re used to, the Polo Bear opted for a more modern, hypebeast-inspired outfit, complete with a bright yellow beanie and camouflage pants. The small, playful details highlight a theme of recontextualization within the RL label and Jeter’s strong connection to contemporary culture.

Jeter is looking to build a bridge between Polo Ralph Lauren’s historical code and forward-looking streetwear that democratizes elite American menswear. Through his designs, he reveals a soft spot for audiences of all socio-economic backgrounds and races. Making his efforts an open invitation to all into sophisticated luxury.

This collection feels unconventionally proper, grounded in Ralph Lauren’s enduring vision, yet still slightly subversive. Jeter sends an important message to the entire industry, underscoring the importance of innovation without neglecting brand heritage. All in all, the future of Polo menswear is in the hands of a true expert who is helping the brand enter one of its most culturally resonant and inclusive chapters, which could have a strong impact on shaping American Prep style and contemporary fashion as we know it.
