Ebie chatted with us about her song “Head Hurts,” music being a form of therapy, and how her community can move forward after Nipsey Hussle’s passing.

Were you nervous to put your cover of “Double Up” out into the world?
Absolutely not.. I’ve done quite a few covers over the years and “Double Up” is by far the one that meant the most to me. It was extremely therapeutic for me to sing all while starting to deal with and process a lot of my emotions I’ve suppressed since my father’s passing that arose from Nip’s untimely death. Being that powerhouses and culture shifters that were taken far too soon it just hit so close to home. I think it’s also extremely important to continuously shed light on the angel that was walking on Earth… The late great Nipsey Hussle. We must forever acknowledge the legends’ efforts and influence.
What inspired the visuals?
I wanted something simple that wouldn’t take away from the record itself but also represented my dedication and tribute while still showcasing EBIE the artist. That’s my real drummer Emmo in the video with me.
Nipsey Hussle inspired hundreds of people in his community. How do you think the people of Crenshaw can take what they’ve learned from Nipsey and move forward?
Simply sticking together and supporting one another. Understanding that the world is huge, it must be experienced, and anything you want you can achieve, you just gotta go get it. In the words of Nip ‘Dedication, hard work plus patience.’
Is music a form of therapy for you?
Absolutely, the whole process of music is therapeutic from writing to singing to performing. Music is the universal language every human being understands emotions. Personally, I do feel my best and am at ease actually recording. That’s my favorite part.
Tell us about your single “Heart Hurts.” What inspired the lyrics?
“Heart Hurts” is a sick ass mixture of all of my musical influences EDM/Pop/Hip Hop. The lyrics were inspired by a breakup. It’s how most people feel right after you and the love of your life just end a relationship. It’s not even just for women…whether they admit it or not, men experience heartache as well, haha. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes. It’s okay to cry and admit you’re hurting. It’s all a part of the healing process.
What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
Practice makes perfect and always be true to yourself. Authenticity is everything. Your fans have to believe you to believe IN you. I’d also say my biggest regret was being a perfectionist and not jumping out there head first fast enough because I was waiting for that “perfect moment”.. life isn’t perfect just go after your dreams!
