Christopher Farrar can thank Matilda for sparking his interest in acting and putting him on a path that has allowed him to co-star in a film with Viola Davis. Farrar talked to NYOTA about his film G20, getting to do stunt work, and what he learned from his cast mates.

Your acting journey started early in life. What initially sparked your interest in acting?
Initially, it was my parents who got me into acting, but it was actually Matilda that really inspired me. Seeing the girl in that movie act made me fall in love with the art of filmmaking and acting. I loved watching the movie growing up.
Tell our readers about G20. What drew you to the project?
G20 caught my attention right away. When I found out who I’d be working with, I was even more excited. I also really connected with my character, which made it feel like the perfect fit. He’s smart and charismatic and someone I’d like to be friends with.
What was your process for getting into character?
I have a pretty simple process. The night before, I go over the scenes we’re filming the next day and start thinking about how my character would feel and act. Patricia [the director] was really open to me making my own choices, and with the amazing set and costumes, it all came together naturally.
Marsai Martin plays your sister Serena in the film. Did the two of you work closely to ensure you portrayed a true sibling bond on screen?
Yes! We spent a lot of time in the green room making jokes and laughing like real siblings. She’s super talented and so easy to connect with. I really gained a real sister from set.

The movie is action-packed, with Viola Davis’ character taking matters into her own hands against a group of terrorists. Were you able to get in on the action and do some stunt work?
I definitely got to jump into some of the action! I got my hands dirty a little, and working with the stunt team was so cool. They taught me a lot about how the magic happens behind the scenes.
G20 has a stacked cast. Did you learn a lot from observing how Viola Davis and the rest of your castmates worked?
Absolutely! I learned so much just from watching how they carry themselves on set and the choices they make in their scenes. They really care about making the best movie possible, and that was inspiring to see. Viola is also hilarious, getting to know her was a great gift and something I will always cherish.
Outside of acting you’re an avid baseball player. Could you see yourself merging your two passions one day and working on a sports related project?
Yes! I’ve actually talked about that with my mom — combining both passions into one project would be amazing. Maybe a biopic or something along those lines.
What advice do you have for aspiring actors?
Never give up. It’s easy to say but harder to do. Take every so-called failure as a lesson and try to learn from everything and everyone around you.
