We got to chat with singer/songwriter Alex Freeman about her song “Oh Baby” and what advice she has for aspiring musicians.
Growing up did you always envision yourself having a creative career?
Absolutely! I’ve never pictured myself doing anything but the career I’m in: creating music and working towards my goals every day.
Tell our readers a bit about your musical journey and how bullying actually brought you to music.
I was bullied at five years old and my parents told me that I had a couple of options. I could be a victim and have a victim mentality my whole life, or I could help make change. So I decided to be a changemaker. The way that I did that was through creating music. I didn’t want other kids to feel like I did, and if they did, I wanted them to know I can relate and have had the same experiences. Ever since then I’ve been creating music. I released my first three songs when I was seven years old and released two others from the time I was 9 to 10. I just started releasing new music about three months ago. I am so grateful to have been able to become a creative artist at such a young age. My first songs really helped me to grow and learn how to write, sing and perform in front of audiences.
You took a negative situation and turned it into a positive one. Do you often try to channel that positivity into your music?
Absolutely. It’s a kind of negative world out there and I think it’s so important as an artist to create art that uplifts, inspires, and radiates good energy because we all need a little bit of Positivity.
What inspired the lyrics to your single “Oh Baby?”
You know that feeling that you get when you really like a person and you’re excited to see them, talk to them, and be around them? That’s the feeling we wanted for “OH BABY. “
Who are some of your musical inspirations?
Christina Aguilera, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Amy Winehouse, Madison Beer, and Ariana Grande.
What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
Never stop working on your craft. It’s so important to practice every day and do the things that you know will improve your skill sets. It’s so important when it comes to your instruments or vocals. Oh, and learn all about your art, get obsessed with it. Know as much as you can about your field.
