We got to chat with actor Jacques Chevelle about his show Side Hustle on Nickelodeon and what inspired him to start acting.

Did a particular movie or television show inspire you to start acting?

When I saw Queen Latifah on screen, I just knew! It was something she translated through the screen to my subconscious. All I knew for sure is that I wanted to be an actor.

Tell our readers about Side Hustle. What is it about and what drew you to the project?

“Side Hustle” is about three kids who get in a world of trouble when they explode my father’s boat. They now have to find creative jobs to do to pay back my father. Jaget (my character) makes sure they get the money in on time. The character reminded me of the relationships that I had in my childhood. I brought some of those moments to my character. It is a lot of fun!

Your character Jaget fits into the mix by being the person who makes sure the app runs smoothly. In your own life are you a planner/the person who likes to guide others?

No, absolutely not! My friends would probably describe me as a “go with flow” kind of guy.

Do you have a favorite episode you’ve shot?

Yes, episode 6! I can’t tell you much about it yet, but it has one of my favorite props of the season so far! Make sure to be on the lookout for it.

In today’s culture, it seems like young people are creating side hustles left and right. Was that trend a large inspiration for the show?

Yes, I feel that everyone, no matter what age or where you live, can have a side hustle. It’s the best part of living in this century. In the digital age, it’s so easy to connect and share with people.

What advice do you have for aspiring actors?

Find fun in the exploration and performance!
