Joy Kate Couldn’t Imagine Doing Anything Else

We got to chat with singer-songwriter Joy Kate, who is already making her mark in the industry at age 16. She chatted with NYOTA about her single “Body” and her advice for aspiring singers.

When did music become a passion of yours?

From a young age, music was always something that touched my emotions. I was a very shy kid, and no one around me thought I would be able to come alive on stage, let alone sing in front of anyone. The second my feet hit the stage at six years old, I knew I had to explore and find as much music as possible. Now music is my life, and when I’m not listening to it, I am writing, singing, or playing guitar. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else, and I’m so thankful for music and everything it has done for me.

Do you have a particular songwriting process?

My songwriting process varies for each song, but usually, a certain experience or emotion triggers lyrics that I immediately record as a voice memo or write down in my notes. I also love writing lyrics and melodies to tracks or with my guitar.

Has quarantine given you time to work on new music?

Yes, quarantine has been a time where I have fully immersed myself in music. From collaborations with other artists around the country to writing almost every day on my own, this has been a very busy and creative time.

Tell us about your single “Body.” How did you hone in on the way the song would sound?

Going into the writing session of “Body,” I knew I wanted to try a new sound and experiment with something I had never done before in previous songs. We immediately found this cool, electronic yet dreamy vibe while I was freestyling over the track and knew it was worth chasing. I am so in love with how “Body” turned out, and I think it is the perfect song to introduce that new sound to my listeners.

What inspired the lyrics?

Before heading off to college and meeting so many new people, I wanted to write myself a song as a reminder to never change for someone else and to try to stay away from people with bad intentions or manipulative tendencies. I know how my heart works, and it is up to me to protect myself. When writing the lyrics, I also wanted to encourage my fans to keep searching until they find that special someone they can’t live without.

You’re currently attending NYU. What are some tips and tricks you’ve learned there that have been helpful in your career?

This is my first year at NYU, and I’ve only been here one week, but so far, the faculty at Clive Davis has been very welcoming and encouraging. They have mentioned several times how important seeking knowledge is as a communicator. I’m most excited to learn how to produce my own music, further develop my songwriting, and continue to make connections with people in the music industry.

Who are some of your music inspirations?

Some of my musical inspirations include Carole King, Astrid S, Halsey, Chelsea Cutler, and Morgan Saint. I update my playlists every day with new songs I’m loving at the moment.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Don’t let anyone else stop you from doing something you’re passionate about, and always stay true to yourself.
