We got to chat with musician Sam Pine about his single “WHY CAN’T U” and his album Evergreen.
Growing up in Denver did you often participate in the music scene there?
Yes, from a very young age I was involved in multiple bands and groups that played around Denver. I was lucky enough to meet other artists my age and older because I ended up studying music at an arts school for all of my middle school and high school years.
Who are some of your music inspirations?
Tom Misch, Brockhampton, Still Woozy, Nina Simone, and Led Zeppelin are a few of my favorites.
Tell our readers about your song “WHY CAN’T U?” Do you often pull from personal experiences when writing lyrics?
The song “WHY CAN’T U?” was my response to relationships in my life coming to an end. It was very reactionary and in the moment and although the message and meaning was personal to me, I really believe it can be just as personal to the listener. Breakups and endings are only a natural part of life and that’s what I try to reconcile with this track.
Did you have any specific influences when it came to the way “WHY CAN’T U?” would sound?
Not really…this song was one of those instances where it was easy to write and everything seemed to flow naturally in terms of the production and songwriting.
Tell our readers about your album Evergreen. Does it feel surreal to have your work out there and available to connect with listeners?
Evergreen was the first step in my solo career and I am incredibly proud of this body of work. “Evergreen” gives the listener an introduction into my world of sound and offers a wonderful base to launch my career into future records and albums. It feels totally surreal… I mean what once was very personal now serves a greater purpose… and I’m so excited for you to hear it.
What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
Set aside time to be creative every day… trash the phone for a period of time and give yourself the opportunity to make weird noises.
