We got to chat with singer/songwriter Georgia Webster about her songwriting process, connecting with listeners on TikTok, and her song “Push & Pull” which can be found on her EP First Goodbye.
Has music always been your go-to way to express yourself?
I definitely have been expressing myself through music from a young age. In the 4th grade, I started teaching myself guitar and writing songs at that time as well. I used to be more into storytelling as a kid like I would write little books and poems and things like that. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, and I think reading that series in 3rd/4th grade got me into writing.
Tell us about your song “Push & Pull.” What inspired the lyrics?
“Push & Pull” is about pulling away from a seemingly perfect person, and being really frustrated about it. I think when you’re not used to someone treating you with an immense amount of love and doing all these nice things for you, it starts to feel like too much.
Do you have a specific songwriting process?
Usually, my best songs take me around 10-15 minutes. “First Goodbye” took me around 10 minutes. I’ll just have an inspiration strike, and then go to my bedroom and write it down.
On TikTok, you often take requests for types of songs to write. Do those writing exercises keep you feeling creative?
Yea, I have done this a lot! When I have writer’s block and don’t have much going on in my life, writing about other people’s stories definitely helps me.
Has social media, TikTok specifically, allowed you to connect with listeners in a more intimate way?
TikTok has definitely helped me to connect with listeners in the sense that I can talk to them and get their reactions on what they like/don’t like. It’s such a crazy platform and it’s interesting to see which songs do well and which ones don’t.
What advice do you have for aspiring singers?
As cliche as it is, my advice would be to follow your dreams, and be yourself!! My dad has always told me to find a job that doesn’t feel like work. Songwriting is that for me, and I wouldn’t have been where I am now if I hadn’t gone with my gut and followed my dreams.
