We got to chat with singer/songwriter Devon Beck about her single “Mirrors” and her advice for aspiring singers.
Has music always been your go-to creative outlet?
Yes, music has always been my outlet. I am not an emotional person; I can’t express emotion very well and music is the only outlet I have to express how I’m feeling about a certain situation.
Tell our readers about your song “Mirrors.” What inspired the lyrics?
My last single was released in July of 2020. I had a setback that following year and lost complete direction of where I was going in the industry. Fast forward to January 2021, I sat down with the co-writer of this song, Sam Grow, and he helped me voice how I was feeling. This song helped me find my new direction and I’m so thrilled people will be able to hear my side of the story.
Learning that everyone is not who they say they are is a lesson everyone goes through. Did you have a specific event happen that led to the creation of your song “Mirrors?”
Yes, I was working with people who didn’t have my best interest at heart. It sent me into a total setback.
What was it like collaborating with Sam Grow on the single?
Sam was amazing! We have known each other for a couple years now, and this song felt like “right place right time.” He had an understanding of what I was going through, and he helped me voice my thoughts into a song.
Has the pandemic changed your music creation process in any way?
Yes, it has… I think part of my setback was also due to the pandemic. When I stopped writing, I never started again. Due to lack of confidence, never knowing if the world would open back up again, free time to do whatever I wanted to, etc. It definitely changed me.
What advice do you have for aspiring singers?
The advice I would give to aspiring singers is, always be on your A-game. You never know who may be listening or in the room!
