Actress Alondra Delgado can now be seen on the hit CW show All American. Delgado chatted with us about her character Vanessa and the advice she has for aspiring actors.
Did a particular movie or television show get you interested in acting?
I grew up in Puerto Rico. I used to watch Telenovelas with my mom and act out scenes saying I was the mean one.
All American season two ended with a bang when we see Spencer re-injure his arm after making the decision to switch schools. Where does your character Vanessa Montes fall into things?
Vanessa comes in as the new girl at Beverly High who is involved in the summer secrets everyone has been talking about and waiting to find out. She changes the vibe of the squad and creates a bit of drama without really wanting to.
Can you relate to Vanessa in any way? If not, what did you do to step into her shoes?
Yes definitely. Vanessa is confident and knows what she wants. That is something I can relate to nowadays more than before. She is a bit more outgoing than I am. I have to get outside my box sometimes to feel more freely like she does.
Not only do you play a new girl in All American but for season three you were the new girl on set. What was it like getting to know your castmates and shooting during the pandemic?
At first, I was a bit nervous as everyone already knew each other. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, and they made me feel part of the team right away. It was different with all the protocols such as face coverings and social distancing, but we all managed to find ways to have a great time on set, and I’m very grateful for that.
Outside of acting you also write and you were able to do so for the short film Bygone and for the short A Will to Love. Do you hope to write for television in the future?
I would love to. There are so many stories that need to be told. Writing is a beautiful way to inspire others, and I would love to be able to do that. I’m working on a few things that would be great to create and film.
What advice do you have for aspiring actors?
It is hard, but it is not impossible. If acting is your passion, you need patience, confidence, positivity, and perseverance. You are going to face a lot of rejection, but it has nothing to do with your talent. So many factors are involved in not booking the role. Trust yourself and the process, work hard, always practice your craft and creativity, and it will pay off.
