We got to chat with singer/songwriter Olivia King about her song “Old Soul” and advice she has for aspiring singers.

Before pursuing a singing career did you do choir or musical theatre growing up?

Yes! I actually started in church choir in 3rd grade!

I feel like a lot of people could relate to your latest song “Old Soul”. What inspired you to write it?

Ah thank you! That’s definitely why I wrote this one. I’ve never opened up in my music about feeling like a bit of an outcast so it felt good to do that in “Old Soul.” I don’t drink or smoke so I felt soooo out of place in college. All I wanted to do was stay in my dorm and write music. I’ve always felt like an “old soul” and feel like my mindset is just different from a lot of kids my age.

Is songwriting often therapeutic for you or reflective of things going on in your life?

Definitely both. I’ve gone through tough break ups and wrote about it and almost immediately felt better and empowered. There’s something so magical about music that way!

As an artist on the rise in the digital age do you think streaming platforms have been a tool that has truly allowed your music to reach a wider audience?

Oh absolutely. Spotify doesn’t seem to discriminate against indie artists. If anything, they take pride in boosting indie careers. I’m actually so happy to be living in a time like this in the music industry.

Has quarantine given you a lot of time to work on new music?

YES. I’m fortunate enough to have a home studio so as soon as quarantine started, I was actually super motivated to write as much music as possible because I knew I may never have this much time home again.

What advice do you have for aspiring singers?

I tend to always give this advice but it’s the best I got lol. CONSISTENCY!!! We live in such a fast paced world so if you are not consistently giving people new content and music, they tend to forget about you. Stay top of mind for them and you will win!
